Hooray for apples! Apple season is officially here and apple cider is going to be popping up on shelves and farmers markets everywhere. Apple cider contains polyphenols, which are compounds in plants that act as antioxidants. They can help the body to fight against free radicals and cell damage, lowering your risk of certain types of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Apple cider also has several other vitamins and minerals such as; Potassium, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.

This apple cider slush is perfect for days with warmer weather and also gets us ready for the fall season. Bring on the apples, pumpkins, and flannel.

Apple Cider Slush

Ingredients

2 Cups Granulated Sugar
3 Cinnamon Sticks
3 Whole Cloves
1 1-inch piece Fresh Ginger
2 Cups Cold Water
3 Cups Apple Cider

Makes 4 Slushies

Steps

  1. Combine the sugar with the cinnamon sticks, cloves and ginger in a small saucepan. Add the water and place over medium-high heat. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
  2. When cool, strain through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding the solids. At this point you can store the syrup, covered and refrigerated, for up to 3 months.
  3. Combine the cider with 1/2 cup of the syrup in a blender jar. Add chopped ice to fill the jar. Process until a slushie mixture is formed. Serve immediately.
