Quick Apple Dumplings

Fall is fast approaching and so is baking season! Apple picking is a fantastic fall activity to enjoy with friends and family and so is baking your favorite apple desserts. These apple dumplings have all the taste and flavor of traditional apple pie with a lot less coring and slicing.

The perfect apples for this recipe are; Granny Smith apples (which we love for their tartness), Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Jonathan, and Gala. Granny Smith will stay firmer in the dumpling. Galas will soften up a bit more. Most importantly, be sure to have your favorite vanilla ice cream on hand!

Ingredients

8 Medium Apples, Peeled and Cored
2 Cups Sugar
2 Cups Water
1/2 tsp Cinnamon, Divided
1/2 tsp Nutmeg, Divided
1/2 Cup Butter or Margarine
4 Refrigerated Pie crusts
Yield: 8 servings

Steps

  1. Bring 1 1/2 cups sugar, 2 cups water, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp nutmeg to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup butter. Set the syrup aside.
  2. Combine 1/2 cup sugar, remaining 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and remaining 1/4 tsp nutmeg.
  3. Cut pie crusts in half and roll and press into 8-inch circles. Place 1 apple in the center of each circle. Sprinkle each evenly with sugar mixture and a pad of butter.
  4. Fold dough over apples, pinching to seal. Place in a lightly greased 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Drizzle with syrup.
  5. Bake at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
